VINYL WALL DECALS
What are die-cut vinyl wall decals?
Vinyl wall decals are graphic cut outs using self-adhesive coloured vinyls. They are intricately cut by machine (not printed with ink) followed by the removal of the negative space, leaving only the design itself to be installed.
Read about how your decals go from a roll of vinyl to the finished product here.
Unlike printed decals where the graphics are ink printed onto a clear or white vinyl backing, die cut decals do not come with any backing. Instead, your wall colour serves as the background giving a clean, seamless & professionally painted effect.

What are the available colours that I can choose from?
We carry 3 ranges of colours - MATTE, METALLIC & FROSTED.
MATTE colours are solid finishes. They are the most popular and are suitable for all surfaces including walls & glass.
METALLIC colours come in a matte finish and offer a sheen. They are non-reflective and are also suitable for all surfaces including walls & glass.
FROSTED colours are semi-translucent and are ideal for glass surfaces.
How are wall decals commonly used?
For residential homes, wall decals are popularly used as decorative wall art in all areas of the homes - living rooms, dining halls, childrens' rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, balconies etc.
Most customers install decals on painted walls while others can opt to have them on glass doors, shower screens, windows and even ceilings!
Head over to our Customer Gallery and get inspired by how some of our customers have done up their homes with our decals.
Will the decals crack, peel, fade or warp?
If the decal is properly applied as directed, you should not have such issues.
Also, as your decals are die cut (and not ink printed), there will not be any colour fade issue.
Are Decorette's decals safe for children?
Absolutely! Our decals are widely used to decorate childrens' bedrooms, nurseries, schools and child care centres.
Decorette uses high quality non-toxic vinyl materials imported from Europe that do not contain hazardous substances. They are REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) compliant and have been certified to be lead chromate free.
What kind of surfaces are SUITABLE for decals?
Our decals can be applied on any clean, dry, flat surfaces that are free of grease, wax and silicone.
Examples of suitable surfaces include: Even slightly textured surfaces (e.g. orange peel texture) are still acceptable. If you are unsure about your surface suitability, do request for some test decals from us. We'll be glad to let you try before you commit.

What kind of surfaces are UNSUITABLE for decals?
Examples of unsuitable surfaces include:
- roughly structured, sharp, bumpy surfaces
- brick, concrete, cement walls, heavily plastered walls, gypsum board partitions
- walls with very old paint that flakes or peels off very easily on its own
- walls painted with paints containing silicone or teflon additives. These usually have a shiny finish and feels waxy to the touch
- walls painted with special effects paints such as Nippon Momento range with glitter, powder, or textured effects
If you are unsure about your surface suitability, do request for some test decals from us. We'll be glad to let you try before you commit.
What kind of paints work best for decals?
Generally, most paints in the market should do fine.
What would not work for decals are paints containing silicon or teflon additives.
Can decals be applied to newly painted walls?
Newly painted walls need to be fully dried and cured. Drying is different from curing. Paints may feel dry to the touch hours after painting but solvents or stabilizers may continue to evaporate for days.
This evaporation process (curing) needs to be completed before decals can be installed over the paintwork. Decorette recommends waiting at least 3 weeks before applying the decals.
Can the decals be installed on wallpapers?
We don't recommend installing decals on wallpapers. This is because wallpapers vary widely in texture and finishing. Most wallpapers would have a layer of laminate over them and this makes adhesiveness tricky.
Are there any other areas I should avoid installing the decals on?
Walls that face the air-conditioning (aircon) directly should be avoided as the aircon draft may dry up the adhesiveness of the decal over time.
Walls that are damp are not suitable as well. These could be walls that back up to cooling systems which could lead to condensation seeping in through the walls.
With Decorette's test decals, what should I take note of?
You have received our test decals to test on your surfaces because you were unsure if decals would be suitable for your surfaces.
Note that as dust and dirt can affect the effectiveness of the decals, do clean the intended surface first and allow to dry out completely before applying the test decals. After applying, leave the test decals on for at least one day.
If the decals holds firm to the surface, you may go ahead and place your orders with us. However, if the decals start to peel or curl at the edges, then it's a clear sign that your surface is not suitable for wall decals.
Is it easy to install the decals myself?
Our decals are all designed for DIY self install purpose and we encourage you to give it a go.
With a little patience and deft hands, you should be able to install the decals yourself like so many of our customers have done.
Before you begin, be sure to go through our installation guides and video posted in our How-To-DIY section.
However, if you need assistance with installation, feel free to contact us. Decorette is able to provide decal installation services upon request.
Is there a difference between installing decals on walls and installing on glass?
Yes, there is a difference in the techniques for installation on painted walls and installation on glass surfaces.
For walls, the standard dry installation method is used.
For glass, the wet installation method is recommended for a smooth, bubble-free installation.
Installation guides on both methods can be found at our How-To-DIY section.
Do the prices of the decals include installation?
Does Decorette provide decal installation service?
Sure we do. As much as we encourage our customers to D-I-Y and install their own decals, we understand that some of you would rather leave it to the experts and get it done right.
Installation charges of our in-store designs for residential homes starts from $50 onwards.
For custom designs and corporate/commercial projects, installation rates vary according to the size of decals and complexity of project. So, please get in touch with us directly.
How long do decals last?
The decals should last at least 2-3 years, depending on the surface it was applied to, the weather conditions and how you care for it.
How easily can the decals be removed?
We use high-quality vinyls with removable adhesive that does not leave any residue on walls.
To remove, simply lift up one corner of the decal and slowly peel the decal from the surface.
Heating the decal slightly with a hairdryer makes removal easier.
Take your time when removing the decals to prevent paint chipping, if any.
Removing decals from glass or window surfaces, however, may leave a residue which can be easily removed with varnish thinner.
Can the decals be reused?
Decals are for one-time use and can be easily stretched or torn in the process of removal.
Besides, it would not be as adhesive after the first application.
How do I clean or maintain the wall decals?
We recommend that you use a soft, slightly damp cloth to clean your wall decal. Dab or wipe over the surface gently. Do not allow water to seep under the edges of the vinyl, as this can loosen the adhesive.
Avoid using cleaners or glass cleaners that contain alcohol, abrasives, citrus additives, or ammonias.
Am I able to customise my own decals?
Certainly! Our team of experts would be happy to work with you to tailor the decal to suit your space and achieve the effect you desire.
What kind of information do I need to provide for decal customisation?
Here are a few things we need from you:
a) Share with us your ideas, pictures of text, quotes or reference designs that you like
b) Desired decal size
c) A photo of the wall or space you are intending to apply the decal on (optional but would help us to visualise the space)
You can send us this information via our Contact form or email to contact[at]decorettestore.
I have no idea what size of decal is best suited for my wall. Would Decorette be able to advise?
Sure! Just let us know the size of your wall (width and height), take a photo to show us, and we’d be happy to give you recommendations.
How long does customising a decal take?
We will be able to give you the artwork within 3 to 4 working days once we receive your confirmation of order. The duration is also subject to the time you take on the approval process. We can deliver the finished decal within 2 to 4 days once you approve the final artwork.
I am not good in visualising / decorating. Would Decorette be able to advise me on colours as well?
Sure do! Let us know the colour scheme of your room and the colour of the wall where the decal will be applied. Better yet, send us some photos of the space. We’ll gladly work with you to pick out the colours that suit your space.
What are the available colour choices?
We carry a range of colours and finishing (matte / metallic / frost) for you to pick for your design.
Frosted colours are highly recommended for glass surfaces (e.g. mirrors, windows, etc) as they are semi-translucent.
You can access our range of colours here.
What are the popular designs that people go for?
Would you be able to recommend designs as well?
We would love to! In fact, our strength lies in conceptualising and we can dream up captivating designs to suit you.
Get in touch with us today!
Are there any designs that cannot be customised with die cut vinyl decals?
As our decals are 'die-cut' from coloured vinyls (not printed), most designs are mono-coloured, creating a classic silhouette look. Multi-coloured designs can be created using separate layers of materials.
Because of this, we are not be able to print colours on decals so replicating photos are not do-able. Designs that contain shading effects or colour gradients are also not possible.
In addition, because the materials we carry are pre-coloured (see our range of colours), we are not able to cut for designs where specific colours have to be maintained, such as a corporate colour that is of a certain pantone.
To help you understand better on the possibilities, you may want to check out our production behind-the-scenes on how we transform a roll of vinyl into a finished decal product ready for installation.
PATTERNED PAINT ROLLERS
What is a patterned paint roller?
The patterned paint roller is a tool that creates repeated patterns using paint.
It comprises of 2 parts – the applicator and the rubber patterned roller.
Decorette carries both the single-colour applicator as well as the 2-colour applicator, along with a range of patterned rollers.
All the patterned rollers are interchangeable and reusable with either applicator.
The patterned paint roller is a versatile tool to help you decorate walls, make your own printed fabric and even gift wrapper!
Find out more about our Patterned Paint Rollers here.
How do patterned paint rollers work?
The patterned roller is attached to either the single or 2 colour applicator. As you roll, the patterned roller picks up a thin, uniform layer of paint from the applicator and transfers this onto your surface to create repeated patterns.
You can view the videos of how to use the Patterned Paint Rollers from our D-I-Y section.
What are the differences between the Standard 1-Colour Applicator and 2-Colour Applicator?
The key differences between the Standard Applicator and 2-Colour Applicator are in the setup, the resulting pattern effect & the surfaces that they can be used on.
Standard Single-Colour Applicator
The standard single-colour applicator comprises of the handle and a 6-inch sponge. As the name suggests, it can only take up to 1 colour and paints a pattern of only 1 colour.
The standard single-colour applicator can be used on both WALLS and PAPER (to create beautiful wrapping papers for example).
The 2-colour applicator has a 2-chamber swivel tank that allows you to fill up to 2 different colours of paint. A series of paint transfer rollers within the swivel tank transfers a thin layer of these 2 paints onto the patterned roller, which you roll onto the surface to create 2-colour patterns.
Of course, you could fill the two chambers with the same colour if you wish to create a 1 colour pattern. This is also one advantage of having the 2-colour applicator as it allows you to choose to use either 1 or 2 colours for your patterns.
The 2-colour applicator can be used on both WALLS and FABRICS.
You can view the videos of how to use the Patterned Paint Rollers from our D-I-Y section.
What surfaces can the patterned roller be used on?
Both the patterned paint roller sets work great on walls and wooden surfaces. The 1-Colour applicator can also be used on paper while the 2-Colour applicator works on fabrics too.
You might want to avoid using it on highly uneven surfaces such as rock stone walls.
Are you able to customise the design of the patterned roller?
No, our patterned roller designs are all fixed.
Can I just buy the patterned roller as I already have a paint roller at home?
The patterned roller can only be fitted with our applicator. It would not fit into standard paint rollers in the market.
If you are first-time user, you need to buy the applicator together with the patterned roller as a Starter Pack. Moreover, if you buy as a set, i.e. the Starter Pack, you enjoy savings rather than buying them separately.
However, once you have our applicator, you can add on individual patterned roller without having to buy the starter pack again.
Can I just purchase the foam sponge as replacement?
The high density foam sponge that comes with the 1-colour applicator is made to last with proper handling and care.
If you really need to replace it, you will have to purchase the the applicator that consists of the metal handle and the foam sponge. The foam sponge by itself is not sold separately.
What kind of paint should I use?
Any water-based paint can be used to make your patterned prints. For example, Dulux or Nippon paints used to paint the walls of your home.
Is it easy to do the painting myself?
With a little patience and practice, you should be able to DIY like so many of our customers have done.
Before you begin, be sure to go watch the instructional videos posted in our How-To-DIY section.
The trick here, as compared to normal wall painting using paint brushes, is to NOT use a lot of strength as you only want the patterns to be imprinted on your walls. Using too much strength may cause the paint to smudge. Let the roller guide you instead.
One tip before you embark on your painting project is to secure a big piece of paper (e.g. old newspapers) on the wall using masking tapes. Practise rolling on this paper until you get the hang of it. Once you are confident enough, you can then move onto the actual wall and start painting.
Do you provide painting services?
No, we do not provide the wall painting services.
How do I wash the applicator and patterned roller?
Wash the applicator and patterned roller as soon as you are done using them. Do not let the paint dry up.
You can wash the patterned roller with warm soapy water. Avoid using solvents like thinner or turpentine as they will melt the rubber of the patterned roller.
To clean the foam sponge, remove from the handle and gently squeeze out the paint under running water till the water runs clear. Do not wring or twist it or you will tear the foam.
Let them air dry. Do not dry under direct sunlight for extended period as the heat might melt the rubber. Make sure that the applicator and patterned roller are fully dry before you reuse them.
